Capitols Take Game One of Series From Muskegon

Madison entered Friday night in second place in the Eastern Conference with a chance to keep extending their advantage of the third placed Muskegon Lumberjacks who sat just one point back. Both teams had been offensively heavy so far this season, but it was a low scoring contest early on.

The Capitols came out a bit slow especially when the Lumberjacks were put on the man advantage just a pair of minutes into action. Muskegon had chances on that power play, but Patriks Berzins, Madison's goaltender on Friday, held strong throughout the penalty kill. It wasn't until with just over six to go in the period that the first tally found it's way on the scoreboard.

On that first goal was the Lumberjacks, which marked the third straight game that Madison gave up the first goal. This comes after the Caps were able to score first in each of the team's first three games. Madison would be able to answer with a goal of its own three minutes later with Will Felicio finding the back of the net for his third of the season.

In the second period, the scoreboard was still fairly inactive with only one tally on the board. Luckily for Madison, that tally was a Capitols score. Charlie Michaud struck for his first USHL goal thanks to a forced turnover from Austin Burnevik. The Caps took that 2-1 lead into intermission number two.

In the third, Muskegon had a goal scored and then waved off after review to tie the game at two. Madison found the back of the net to make it 3-1 on a Chris Delaney forced turnover. It was an unassisted tally for the UMass commit with just over two and a half to go in the game. Muskegon would pull the goalie to attempt a comeback, but Max Nagel would slam the door shut with a goal to make it 4-1.

Madison improves to 5-0-1-0 on the season and now sit three points clear of third place in the division. The Capitols still are one point back of Dubuque, but have a chance to hop them tomorrow with a win and a Fighting Saints loss.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm tomorrow night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena. Tickets can be purchased at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
