General Drew Steele

Heil, Stout to Play, Brandt to Coach in 2025 World Junior A Challenge

USA Hockey announced on Wednesday the roster for the 2025 U.S. Junior Select Team competing at the 2025 World Junior A Challenge. Goaltender Caleb Heil and defenseman John Stout will suit up for the red, white, and blue. Capitols Head Coach & General Manager Andy Brandt will serve as the head coach of the team that will compete in Trois-Rivières in December.

Caleb Heil suits up for the U.S. Junior Select Team for the third consecutive World Junior A Challenge. Across five starts between two tournaments, Heil has a perfect 5-0 record with a 1.60 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. The goaltender is 7-4-0-1 with Madison this season holding a 2.91 goals against average in twelve USHL games. Heil is committed to the University of North Dakota and was selected by Tampa Bay in the 2025 NHL Draft.

John Stout returns for his second World Junior A Challenge after serving as an alternate captain of the team that won gold in 2024. The defenseman scored one goal in five games during the tournament in December of last year. Stout has one goal and three assists in 16 games with the Capitols this season. The Wisconsin commit led the USHL in plus-minus rating in 2024-25 with a +44.

After serving as an assistant coach in 2024, Andy Brandt becomes the head coach of the U.S. Junior Select Team heading into the 2025 tournament. The coach of the past two tournaments, Matt Smaby, is now the Associate Head Coach for the University of North Dakota. Brandt assisted Smaby who led Team USA to a first-place finish in 2024. Brandt is in his third season with Madison and has the best point percentage among coaches, .625, for Madison since returning to the USHL in 2014. He becomes the first Capitols coach to serve as head coach of the U.S. Junior Select team. Brandt was one of two head coaches selected to lead a team at the 2025 Chipotle All-American Game.

The 2025 World Junior A Challenge will take place from December 7-13 in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. USA Hockey fields a U.S. Junior Select Team that is comprised of players that compete in junior hockey leagues across the United States. Team USA has won the tournament ten times, including last season, since the event began in 2006. The team will face off against Canada East, Canada West, and Sweden in the tournament.

With two players competing, the Capitols tie the second most in a single tournament competing in franchise history with the 2023 tournament. Last season, Madison had five players taking part in the tournament. Former Capitols to take part in the event include Finn Brink (2023, 2024), Will Felicio (2023), Quinn Finley (2022), Ryker Lee (2024), Mick Messner (2016), Mason Moe (2024), and Ryan O'Reilly (2018).
