The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders galloped into town on Sunday afternoon to take on the Madison Capitols in the two teams' fifth meeting this season. Coming into Sunday, Madison and Cedar Rapids split their previous four games, with the RoughRiders winning the most recent match up, 4-2 on December 7th. Cedar Rapids won on Saturday, 6-2 over Sioux City; the Capitols dropped their Saturday match up against Waterloo, 2-0. Madison is still without Caleb Heil and Gustavs Griva, as they are competing at the World Junior Championship in Minnesota.
The RoughRiders took control early in this one, scoring two first-period goals courtesy of Braiden Scuderi and Noel Ohgren. The Caps would answer one of those goals early in the second period when Nolen Geerdes dented the twine to cut the deficit to one. Shortly after Geerdes' goal, Cedar Rapids answered as David Bosco registered his tenth goal of the year to regain a two-goal advantage.
Needing a spark midway through the second period, Sam Kappell was there to provide just that. The Wisconsin native tallied back-to-back goals, one coming on the power play, to tie the game at three apiece. Sullivan Miller would slip one past Capitols goaltender, Brady Krey, with five seconds left in the second to take the 4-3 lead for the RoughRiders going into the second intermission.
To start the third, Madison's Chris Baird-Gajdos lit the lamp for the second time this season. His goal would provide another spark for the Caps as they would go on to score two more in the third courtesy of Jet Kwajah and Gavin Uhlenkamp to secure the 6-5 win over Cedar Rapids.
