The Capitols hosted the top team in the Eastern Conference on Thursday night. Madison was able to pick up a 3-1 victory and pull within five points of the top seeded Saints.
Egor Barabanov opened the scoring midway through the first period, firing home his 13th goal of the season off a feed from Bobby Cowan. Dubuque responded shortly after with an unassisted tally from Gavin Cornforth, tying the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, Aiden Long put Madison back in front, netting his 20th goal of the year at 8:30 with an assist from Barabanov. From there, the Capitols locked things down defensively, backed by another stellar performance from goaltender Caleb Heil, who turned aside 29 of 30 shots.
With Dubuque's goalie pulled late in the third period, Finn Brink iced the game with an empty-net goal at 18:40, his 22nd of the season. Heil picked up the lone assist on the play, setting a franchise record for most assists by a goaltender in a single season with four.
Madison improves their season record and continues their push in the USHL standings with a game on Friday against Cedar Rapids.
