Riding a two-game winning streak, Madison made their second stop of the weekend in the Hawkeye State on Saturday night. Madison defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks last night, courtesy of a Caleb Heil shutout and a penalty-free performance from the Caps skaters. Tonight, Madison took the ice against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for the final time in the regular season.
Cedar Rapids got on the board first in this one, scoring the lone goal while on the power play in the first period. Madison's Caleb Pittsley was able to answer with a power play goal of his own midway through the second period. Tied at one apiece going into the third period, Cedar Rapids reclaimed the lead when Ruben Westerling scored his seventh goal of the season. Capitols' leading goal scorer, Sam Kappell, was quick to respond as he registered his 18th goal of the season to tie it up at two.
With the game still knotted after regulation, it headed to overtime. Less than a minute into the extra frame, Western Michigan commit Max Rider dented the twine, recording his third game-winning goal this season and securing the 3-2 win over the RoughRiders.Â
Caleb Heil turned in another strong performance between the pipes. He saved 22 of the 24 shots sent his way, earning his 12th win of the season.
