Madison Beats Youngstown to Split Weekend Series

Capitols Beat Phantoms in Overtime

The Youngstown Phantoms were back at Bob Suter's LEGACY20 Arena on Saturday night to face the Madison Capitols to complete the weekend series. Youngstown took game one in Madison on Friday night 5-2. The Capitols lit the lamp first in this one when Villie Vaarala found himself with the puck and buried it to make it 1-0. Vaarala's goal would be the lone goal of the first period. Midway through the second, it was Jackson Nevers' turn to tally one more for the Caps. Nevers' fifth goal of the season would give the Capitols a 2-0 lead going into the final frame.

The Phantoms weren't going down without a fight, though. Less than a minute into the third, Cooper Simpson would add one for the Phantoms to get Youngstown within one. After a scoreless 18 minutes went by in the third, Simpson would add his second goal of the period and send the game to overtime. With 53 seconds left in overtime, Capitols forward Sam Kappell snuck one by Phantoms goaltender Tobias Trejbal to register his 17th goal of the year and secure the win for the Caps. Elliot Lennon kept the crease clean for Madison. The 6'6" goalie hailing from Kirkland, Quebec, Canada, padded away 30 of the 32 shots sent his way and earned his first USHL win in his second start.
