Dominic Zombo is entering his fourth season with the Capitols, third full season as an assistant coach for the team. He joined Madison on an interim basis in March of 2023 before becoming a full time assistant in May of 2023 when Andy Brandt was brought on as Head Coach & GM. He worked alongside Tom Gilbert in the 2023-24 season when having the interim tag to finish the season. The Capitols outscored opponents in the final nine games of that season 39-29, which was the best of any stretch of that season.
Zombo, a former forward, helped the Capitols break the Tier 1 franchise record for goals in a season, 250, and break the goals per game mark, 4.03. The team finished second in the league in both categories last season. Along with the one of the top offenses in the league, the Capitols had the best power play percentage in the franchise’s Tier 1 history clicking at a 27.7% rate, which finished second in the USHL last season. Madison was a tenth of a percentage away from having the top power play in the league last season.
Along with his USHL responsibilities, Zombo is entering his fourth season as the Head Coach of the Madison Capitols AAA 18U and 16U teams that play at Bob Suter’s LEGACY20 Arena as well. Prior to joining the Capitols AAA program, Zombo spent two seasons as the head coach of the Green Bay Jr. Gamblers 16U AAA team.
Prior to his time as a coach, Zombo had a four-year professional playing career to go along with four years of college hockey and two full seasons in the USHL. During his professional career, Zombo racked up 250 games played while recording 81 points. He played with Cincinnati, Kalamazoo, Toledo, and Wichita (alphabetically) in the ECHL with his most productive year coming in 2015-16 with Toledo. In 69 games, Zombo picked up 26 points including ten goals.
Zombo skated for the University of Nebraska-Omaha at the collegiate level where he served as a captain his senior season and an alternate in his junior year. He finished third on the team in scoring his sophomore season with 35 points, his most in a single-season during his collegiate career. He was tied for second with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Jake Guentzel during his junior season when he scored 34 points. During his senior season, Omaha advanced to the Frozen Four after regional wins over Harvard and RIT. They ultimately fell to Providence in the national semifinal, which marked the furthest any Omaha team had made it in program history.
Before joining the Mavericks, the Missouri native played two full seasons in the USHL with Sioux Falls. After putting up 21 points as a rookie in 50 games, Zombo scored 36 points while playing in every game for the Stampede that season. He helped lead Sioux Falls to the Western Conference Final where they ultimately fell to eventual champion Dubuque. Zombo had six points in the ten playoff games played by the Stampede on the run.
