Capitols Drop Series Opener to Muskegon 5-3

Following a weekend off, the Capitols started a two-game series against Muskegon on Friday night. The matchup would be the first between the two sides since the teams met in the Eastern Conference Finals in May. Madison came into the game hoping for the same result in the weekend series as they had in the post season series.

The game started off with a bang for the Capitols with two first period goals. The first, coming off of the stick of Miko Matikka at four-on-four. The goal for Matikka extends his home goal streak to four, all of the home games to date for the Capitols. Matt McGroarty continued the first period scoring for the Caps sneaking one through the five-hole of Muskegon's netminder. For McGroarty, the goal marked his third of the season.

The second period would get testy at times for Madison, as Muskegon tied things at two aside. The Capitols answered quickly after, though, to gain the lead back before the end of the period. Quinn Finley tallied his third of the season to bring the Caps into intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Muskegon was able to strike two times early in the third period to take a 4-3 lead. Once they had the lead, they never gave it up adding an insurance tally to make it 5-3. The Capitols found themselves on the penalty kill late in the game and never found the chances to tie it up.

The two teams will battle again tomorrow night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Tickets are still available at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
