Following a tough loss for Madison on Saturday night, they had a quicker than usual turnaround as an afternoon puck drop Sunday allowed the team to turn the page quickly. The game on Sunday was the team's annual Teddy Bear Toss, which the Capitols got to celebrate early in Sunday's game.
Madison had the better chances in the first period spending the majority of their time at even strength in the offensive zone. Even with that, Youngstown was able to outshoot the Capitols in period number one. Luckily, the team with the more shots does not always score the more goals.Â
Just over half way through the opening period, Jack Musa won a draw back for Madison. Musa, typically a winger, was shuffled to the middle for Sunday's game. The draw that was won back to Matikka was on-and-off the stick of the Finnish forward as quickly as he could send it that way. The initial attempt was stopped by the Phantoms goaltender, but the second was not. Nathan Lewis had the rebound come right down to his stick, which he slammed home for his fifth of the season to make Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena rain teddy bears and stuffed animals. Madison took the 1-0 lead into intermission number one.
With Madison's offensive zone time dropping a little bit in the second, their lead evaporated. Youngstown's Svoboda was able to find the back of the net twice in one shift to give the Phantoms their first lead of the night. The deficit stayed at the 2-1 number for most of the second, but Youngstown was not content only being up one heading into the second intermission. They added a third goal, which made the lead two after two.
In the third period, Madison started off quiet, but just over 7 minutes into the period is when the Caps turned it on a goal on a one-time chance from Miko Matikka. The goal for Matikka was his 14th goal of the year to bring the Capitols back within one. Just 22 seconds later, the Caps once again found the back of the net. Gustav Portillo sent his first of the season into the back of the net and made it all square at three.
The Caps killed off a penalty, which Madison then made their way onto the power play moments later. On the man advantage, the Capitols were able to strike with Will Felicio finding the back of the net for the second straight game. This gave Madison the lead, and Matt McGroarty was able to extend the lead to 5-3 with an empty netter to put the cherry on top.
Madison moves to 7-14-0-1 this season with a series split against the Phantoms. The Capitols have a couple of days off before they hit the ice at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday against Chicago. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm on both nights with tickets available at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
