Madison faced against a common opponent on Friday night to start a home and home against the Chicago Steel. This would be the fifth final time of the season that the Steel came to Madison to face off against the Caps.
In the first period, the Steel got out to a quick start finding the back of the net just under two minutes into the game. Madison fought and fought to find a response, which they did late in the period when Trey Ausmus riffled one toward the net. On the way, a deflection from Jack Musa found its way past Christian Manz to even the game at 1-1 after one period of play.
In the second, Madison jumped out to their first lead of the night thanks to an Andrew Kuzma goal. The goal for Kuzma was number four on the year, and put the Caps up 2-1. Just over a minute later, the Caps funneled another toward the Chicago net. There were no deflections, just screens out front for Madison, but the puck saw its way through the traffic to make it 3-1. The Steel answered back with two goals of their own quickly in the second period as the game skated square through two.
The third showed a quiet scoreboard throughout the majority of the frame, but Madison was able to find their way on their first power play of the night with just over two to go. The team sent pressure, but Chicago responded with Charlie Major burying what became the game winning goal. An empty netter inflated the score with the Steel taking home game one of a home-and-home series 5-3.
The Caps fall to 7-22-1-1 on the season and face off against the Steel tomorrow night on the road. Puck drop is at 7:05 pm in Geneva.
