Madison ended a three game weekend on Saturday night. The game was the back end of a home and home set in Geneva against Chicago. The two teams made a trade on Friday prior to the start of the two-game series. Madison sent
Quinn Finley back to Chicago in exchange for
Jack Brandt, two draft picks, and future considerations. Although Finley came into the weekend with more points than Brandt, it was the new Capitols player making the biggest impact on Saturday.
In the first period, the Capitols found themselves on the penalty kill for nearly half the period with an early major penalty followed by a minor later on. The situations that the Caps were in during the first period was not idea facing the league's top power play for an extended period. Headed into Saturday, Madison was the only team to not have a shorthanded goal this season. This changed during the first period on Saturday night when the Caps dumped a puck down the length of the ice. A Chicago defender went back in attempts to pick up the puck, but his attempts were unsuccessful. There to pick up the change was
Matt McGroarty. McGroarty found the back of the net to put the Capitols up 1-0. He scored his fourth goal against the Steel this season in seven games.
That score remained the same throughout the rest of the first period with Madison leading 1-0 at intermission. Chicago evened things to make it 1-1 at intermission number two. Although things were even heading into the second, the play of the Caps all weekend showed that they were ready to fight to take two points from Saturday's game in the third.
The Capitols came out hot in the third period, and it was a new face making an impact for the team early on. Brandt was out of the lineup for his first game available for Madison on Friday, but in his debut with the team on Saturday, he found the go ahead goal. He scored in his debut with his new team against his former team to give the Caps a lead that the team wouldn't look back on. Two minutes after the Brandt tally,
Nick Wallace added to the lead on the power play. Chicago made their attempt at a comeback later on in the period getting within one.
Jack Musa put the dagger into the heart of Chicago on Saturday night with an empty netter with three seconds left in the game. This was the Capitols second win of the season against the Steel this season, third game taking points from Chicago. Madison improved to 8-22-1-1 on the season.
The Capitols travel to Youngstown next weekend to face off against the Phantoms for the fifth and sixth times this season. In the first four matchups of the year, Madison won three of the matchups, which included a sweep during the Caps first visit to the Covelli Centre in October. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm ET on both Friday and Saturday night.
