During the 2022-23 season, the Capitols were unable to score seven goals in a game all season. To this point of the 2023-24 season, through fourteen games, Madison has already scored seven three times this season. This was the case on Friday as well, but the game was the first time that the team had lost while scoring seven this season.
Madison selected
Sam Kappell first overall in the 2023 Phase I Draft in May, and he made his USHL debut in the game on Friday. Kappell could not have asked for a better start to his career scoring one goal and assist on another picking up his first two points in the league.
Gordie Howe hat tricks are hard to come by in today's hockey, and
James Hong looked to have had one until his fighting penalty was ruled a double major for roughing. Both players dropped the gloves, but neither was able to throw a punch in the fight. His shift following the penalties, Hong scored to tie the game at 6-6.
Patriks Berzins allowed a season high eight goals past him on 27 shots on net. Coming into the weekend, Berzins was in the lead in save percentage and goals against in the league, and although he stays in the top ten, he now no longer occupies that high.
The season series between the Capitols and Steel is now tied at 1-1 after Chicago's best offensive performance of the season. Both of these games were played in Madison, so as the saying goes "It's not a series until a team takes one on the road."
After Madison hits the road on Saturday, the team returns home to face the Green Bay Gamblers in the first edition of the 2023-24 Wisconsin Cheese Cup presented by Odyssey. The game is also themed as Wine Night (Taylor's Version). Come out to not only enjoy all of the wine specials but also jam out to all of Taylor Swift's music.
