The Capitols kicked off their last full road series of the season against Muskegon on Friday night. Madison looked to continue upon recent success, which included a win on the road against the Dubuque Fighting Saints last weekend. The Capitols came into Friday's game with a record of 1-5-0-0 on the season against the Lumberjacks.
In the first period, Madison jumped out to the early lead. Scoring first in games is something that the Capitols have been doing quite frequently as of late. In fact, this marks the sixth straight game where the Capitols have jumped out in front first. The first tally of the game also made it the seventh time out of ten games where Madison jumped out in front since the interim coaching staff took over in mid-March. Finding the back of the net for the lone Madison goal in the first period was
Oliver Flynn. For Flynn, the goal marks his eighth of the season, fifth with the Capitols. The home side, Muskegon, added two unanswered throughout the rest of period number one to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room.
The middle frame of tonight's game is when the tide started to turn for the Capitols. The period started for Madison with an evening tally with an extra attacker on the ice due to an impending Muskegon penalty off the stick of
Nathan Lewis. Lewis would not be satisfied with only one in the score column Friday, though. Later on in the period, it was
Finn Brink to tie things back up at 3-3 heading into intermission. The goal was number seven on the season for the right handed shot forward who has been on a bit of a hot streak lately himself, averaging a point per game over the last four.
In the third, Madison took a lead early on that they would never look back on with Lewis picking up his second goal of the game. The score remained 4-3 down to the wire with Muskegon pulling their netminder with over two minutes to go in the third.
Nathan Lewis once again was able to answer the bell to record the first hat trick of the season for Madison. The goal also moved the Capitols leading scorer to 40 points on the season.
Ethan Elias found the back of the vacated net to make it 6-3 late, which put the cherry on top of a three point night for him as well.Â
Madison skated away with a 6-4 victory after a late goal from the Lumberjacks. The Capitols improve to 15-39-2-2 on the season and pick up their second consecutive win. The win also keeps the Caps success going with this being the fourth of their last five games that Madison has collected points within. The two teams battle once again tomorrow night at the same time and place. Coverage can be found on FloHockey and on the Capitols social media pages.
