Weekend Preview: Caps Host Chicago for Home Opener Friday

After the team's first 2-0-0-0 start since returning to the USHL in the fall of 2014, the Capitols host a familiar foe in the Chicago Steel on Friday night for the team's home opener. The game also marks the first Dollar Beer Night presented by Coors Light of the season. This also means the debut of the team's new third jersey for the 2023-24 season, which can be seen below.

Last Time Out:

The Capitols headed to the 2023 DICK'S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic to face off against a pair of Western Conference teams. The Caps kickstarted the season off with a 7-2 win over Des Moines and followed it up with a 2-1 nailbiting win over Waterloo. The pair of wins not only marked the first wins since the event's inception in the fall of 2018, but it also marked the first time since returning to the league in 2014 that the team started off with a 2-0-0-0 record. The Capitols tied an organizational best of goals allowed through two games with three with both of the team's new goaltenders shining in each of their respective wins.

Scouting Chicago:

It's no secret that the Chicago Steel have been at the peak of the Eastern Conference over the past handful of seasons. In fact, the Steel have won the Eastern Conference regular season title in each of the past four seasons. In their first pair of games in Pittsburgh last weekend, the Steel were able to find one win. In the team's one win, the Steel had to come from down 2-0 to win 3-2 in overtime over Sioux City. The following day, the Steel lost 3-1 to the Lincoln Stars.

Players to Watch:

Chris Delaney, Madison: Delaney is playing in his first game against his former squad on Friday night after being acquired following the 2023-24 season. Delaney played two seasons with the Chicago Steel before joining Madison. He played both of the Capitols' first two games on the second line with Austin Burnevik and Rainers Rullers and was able to record a point on Friday night against Des Moines.

Max Nagel, Madison: Heading into the second weekend of the season, Nagel is tied for forth in the league with four points through two games. After picking up a pair of assists on Friday against Des Moines, the West St. Paul, Minnesota, native deposited both of the Capitols goals against Waterloo on Saturday. Nagel is in his second season with the Capitols and recorded 25 points last season.
