After starting with the franchise's first 2-0-0-0 start in history, the Capitols looked to continue on their historic start on Friday night. All around the league, it was a high scoring affair, and in front of just under 2,200 people in Middleton for the Caps' home opener, the same can be said. One could've looked at the scoreboard at the end of the night and been confused as to if it was a low-scoring football game. All the fans in the suburb of the capital city cared about, though, is that their home squad came away with the victory.
Last season when the Capitols and Steel met up, in seven of the ten matchups, the teams combined goal total amounted to eight or more goals. Through one period, Capitols forward
Finn Brink looked like he might do that all on his own on Friday. Brink had himself a first period on Friday night as he scored not one, not two, but three goals in the opening twenty minutes of the game to record the Capitols first hat trick of the season. The Wisconsin commit has now played in two home openers for the Caps and has scored four goals, five total points, in those two opening nights.
Brink wasn't the only one to find the scoreboard in the first for Madison as his linemate,
Andrew Kuzma found his first of the night on the power play to extend the Caps lead to 4-2 at the time. Kuzma went on to have a two-goal night scoring the team's seventh goal of the night. Friday was his second multi-goal game of the season, the first coming against his former team, Des Moines, in the team's first game of the season.
Madison exited Friday with the league's best first period goal differential with a +4 in the first twenty minutes of games this season.
In the second period,
Chris Delaney was able to strike for the Caps earning his first goal for Madison. The goal meant a bit more for Delaney as the UMass commit was able to score his first goal in his first game against his former team. Delaney was acquired by Madison following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season from Chicago as part of the future considerations package in return for Quinn Finley in January. The goal for Delaney meant a bit more, as the forward screamed in joy as he went by his former team's bench.
Also able to score in the second for Madison was defenseman
Will Felicio. The Capitols top scoring defender from the 2022-23 season had himself a night on Friday after being held off the scoresheet in both games at the Fall Classic. The Denver commit found himself with three points by the end of the night tallying two assists on top of his goal.
Coming into Friday, Madison had outscored opponents 7-1 in the first two periods of games this season. The team extended that margin outscoring the Steel 6-4 through forty minutes. Chicago made it tight in the third, but Kuzma's diving goal to bring the goal total to seven helped secure the win for the Caps at a score of 7-6.
Tied for the league lead in points,
Max Nagel once again found himself with a multi-point effort. Although he wasn't able to score, he was credited for helping his line mates on three goals, which brings him to seven points on the year. Through three games, Nagel is averaging over two points per game in his second season in the league.
