With a goal waved off late in the second period, a double minor late in the third, and two power play goals on the ensuing power plays, Saturday night had all the storylines coming out of Madison's 3-2 win over conference leading Dubuque. Dubuque found the first two in the contest, but Madison's two 20-goal scorers on the season, Austin Burnevik and Andrew Kuzma helped dig the Capitols out of the hole and find two points with the win.
A goal in each the first and the second gave the Fighting Saints a lead half way through Saturday's contest. Austin Burnevik found his 29th of the season to bring the Capitols within one.
Dubuque thought that they had scored their third of the night late in the second period, but a clock malfunction had the clock not start, which would have expired prior to the Noah Powell goal.Â
In the third, the scoreboard remained quiet for much of the period until Austin Burnevik drew a double minor for high sticking. This sent Madison to just their second power play of the night. On the ensuing man-advantage, Andrew Kuzma one-timed home his 19th of the season to tie the game at 2-2 with under five minutes to go in regulation.Â
Madison's power play time dropped to two minutes following the goal, and once again, it was Kuzma finding the back of the net to give the Capitols their first lead of the night. The goal was Kuzma's 40th in his career and 20th of the season. The power play jumped up an entire percentage point to 18.8% on the season after going 2/3 on the night.
Chris Delaney picked up two assists in the game to extend his point streak to five games. The points also gave him his first thirty point season in his USHL career.
Caps backstop, Carsen Musser stopped 22 of 24 shots on goal in the win for Madison. This marked the second straight game allowing two or less for the Arizona Coyotes draft pick as he picked up his 11th win on the year.
Madison starts a three-game road trip tomorrow to face off against Cedar Rapids, who is right on their tails in the Eastern Conference standings. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
Madison returns home on Wednesday, March 6th, to start a five-game home stand. The Caps will face off against the Gamblers on that Wednesday night before hosting Sioux Falls for a pair on Friday and Saturday. Tickets for all three contests can be found at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
