The Capitols hosted Waterloo for the first meeting between the two teams this season. Although Waterloo got the better of the Caps in both preseason games, Madison did not allow the Black Hawks onto the scoreboard on Friday night.
Caleb Heil picked up his first career USHL shutout in the win stopping 24 of 24 shots on goal from the Steel.
Early on, Capitols forward Mason Moe was able to find the scoreboard for his seventh of the season to put the Caps up 1-0, a lead which they brought into the first intermission.
Aiden Long extended the lead in the second period on a tap-in goal on the power play. The goal was his 26th point of the year, which is five more than last year. Long sits in third on the team in points with career highs in both goals and assists.
Madison started the third period shorthanded after a Moe took a penalty at the end of the second period. Two goals were scored when Waterloo were on the man advantage in the game, both by Madison in the third period. One of those goals came eighteen seconds into the third period from Gavin Uhlenkamp, his second shorty of the season.
Sam Kappell closed out the night offensively for Madison with a short-handed empty-netter, his second shorty of the season.
Madison travels to Illinois on Saturday where they will face the Chicago Steel. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
