In-state rival, the Green Bay Gamblers, made the drive down to Bob Suter's LEGACY20 Arena on Sunday afternoon to visit the 8-6-0-1 Madison Capitols. Sunday's game was the first of a three game homestand for the Capitols.
Green Bay struck first in this one, when New Jersey Devils draft pick, David Rozsival, cashed in on the Gamblers first power play of the game early in the opening frame. Later in the first, Green Bay found themselves with the man advantage yet again, when Geno Carcone's shot found the back of the net. Green Bay went 2/2 on the power play in the first, both rewarded to the Gamblers after roughing penalties against the Capitols. Between both teams, there were a total of five roughing penalties assessed in the first period.
After a scoreless second period, a scorching hot Tyden Bergeson dented the twine for the seventh time in his last eight games. The Augustana commit scored on the Capitols fourth power play of the game, bringing Madison within one. With 8:45 left in the third, Capitols blueliner Nolan Geerdes tallied his second goal of the season, knotting the score at two apiece.
Still 2-2 at the end of regulation, this one went to overtime. Three minutes into the extra frame, Max Rider intercepted a Gamblers pass and cashed in on the breakaway, securing the 3-2 win over Green Bay. After the game, reflecting on his team's comeback from an early 2–0 deficit, Rider said, "We knew we had to dig deep, it felt really good to get this one."
Caleb Heil stood between the pipes for Madison, he went on to save 23 of the 25 shots sent his way and earned his 7th win of the year.
