The Waterloo Black Hawks traveled to Madison on Friday night to face the Madison Capitols in the first of the teams' two December match ups. The Capitols traveled to Waterloo in October in a game that the Caps won 3-1. Both teams sit at 7th in their respective conference standings. Madison was coming off of a 0-3 skid from last weekend; the Black Hawks were on a two-game winning streak coming into the night.
Waterloo captured a quick lead to start this one, scoring two unanswered goals in the first period courtesy of Salvatore Viviana and Tyler Deakos. Madison's Sam Kappell would answer one of those goals halfway through the second period when the Minnesota State commit netted his twelfth goal of the year on the Caps power play. Early in the third period, Salvatore Viviana notched his second goal of the night, scoring on the Waterloo power play, to extend the Black Hawks' lead to two.
The Caps weren't going down without a fight, though. Shortly after Viviana's goal, Gavin Uhlenkamp lit the lamp to bring Madison within one. Later in the third, the Tampere, Finland, native, Villie Vaarla, put one home to tie it up and send the game to overtime.
Sixteen seconds into overtime, one of the USHL's fastest skaters, Gavin Uhlenkamp, recorded his second goal of the night and skated off with the Capitols' victory. All three of Madison's unanswered goals in the third period and overtime were assisted by Capitols call-up Brady Smith. The blue liner from Colorado picked up 3 points in his USHL debut.
Cash Cruitt held up between the pipes for Madison; he padded away 16 of the 13 shots sent his way. The Capitols out shot the Black Hawks 16 to 35 and snapped their 3-game losing streak. Madison heads to Green Bay tomorrow to take on the Gamblers.
