The Madison Capitols returned to Bob Suter's LEGACY20 Arena on Sunday afternoon to face the Dubuque Fighting Saints. This was the two teams' first meeting since October. The Capitols came into today riding a two-game winning streak, claiming the final two games of a four-game series with the Chicago Steel. The Fighting Saints split their two games on Friday and Saturday with the Sioux Falls Stampede.
The Capitols were responsible for the first four goals in this one. Madison forward Sammy Smith got the scoring started as he buried his first USHL goal midway through the first period. Capitols leading goal scorer, Sam Kappell, would later register his 19th goal of the season to take a 2-0 lead over Dubuque heading into the first intermission. The Capitols picked up right where they left off to start the second period when Lucas Prud'homme corralled a stretch pass from Stephen Cover and scored his third goal of the year. In the final minutes of the second period, Gustavs Griva set up Sammy Smith, who connected on a one-timer to score his second goal of the game. Dubuque's Masun Fleece would slip one past Capitols goaltender Brady Krey with 15 seconds left in the second period to get the Fighting Saints on the board.
Trailing 4-1 to start the third period, Charlie Arend cashed in on the Fighting Saints' power play to cut the Capitols' lead to two. Later in the third period, Caleb Pittsley tallied the fifth Capitols goal of the game, securing the 5-2 win over Dubuque.
Brady Krey kept the crease clean for Madison. The Albertville, Minnesota product denied 32 of the 34 shots fired his way. With this win, Madison moves up to fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
