The Madison Capitols visited the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Thursday night, which was the final meeting of the regular season between the two teams. Madison and Dubuque came into the night splitting their four previous games this season, with each team winning two. The Capitols looked to extend their five-game winning streak, while the Fighting Saints looked to get back in the winning column after losing three of their last five.
After a scoreless first period, Capitols leading goal scorer Sam Kappell got the Capitols on the board first when Jet Kwajah set him up for his 21st goal of the year while on the power play. Later into the second period, Rihards Griva would extend the Capitols' lead to two, scoring his fifth goal of the season.
To start the final frame, Rihards would find his brother Gustavs Griva, who tallied the third Capitols goal of the game. Dubuque would eventually get on the board midway through the third period, as Gavin Lock and Charlie Arend scored back-to-back goals to get within one of the Capitols.
To close the game, Ronan Buckberger sent the puck into Dubuque's empty net, which was followed by a Lucas Prudhome goal in the final minute to secure the 5-2 win over the Fighting Saints. With this win, the Capitols claim the regular season series over Dubuque, 3-2, and extend their winning streak to six, the longest of the season.
Madison is back home on Friday and Saturday to face off against the Tri-City Storm for the first time this season.
