The Madison Capitols visited in-state rival, the Green Bay Gamblers, on Sunday afternoon at the Resch Center. Coming into Sunday, Green Bay owned the season series 4-1 over the Capitols. Madison split a two-game set with Chicago on Friday and Saturday, while Green Bay split their two-game series with Youngstown.
Madison struck first in this one as Caleb Pittsley picked Landon Hafele's pocket while on the penalty kill and cashed in on the breakaway. Pittsley's goal marked the first shorthanded goal let up by the Gamblers this season. Green Bay responded quickly via an Oliver McKinney power play goal to tie the game at one apiece to end the opening frame.Â
Madison would regain the lead five minutes into the second period when Stephen Cover set up Will Dosan, who buried his seventh goal of the season. Ninety seconds later, Green Bay's Elliot Gulley snuck one past Capitols goaltender Cash Cruitt to tie the game at two apiece. Six minutes after Gulley's first goal, he would tally his second of the game to give the Gamblers their first lead. In the final minute of the second period, Green Bay scored another courtesy of Jack Kultgen to take the 4-2 lead into the second intermission.Â
Green Bay picked up right where they left off to open the third period. Zach Wooten buried his 28th goal of the season while on the power play to balloon the Gamblers' lead to three. The Gamblers would add another goal late to secure the 6-2 win over the Capitols. Madison racked up 27 penalty minutes in this one and will drop to 27-21-0-3 on this season.Â
