The No. 6 Madison Capitols defeated the No. 1 Youngstown Phantoms, 2-1, in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Friday. The win marks the eighth Game 1 victory in franchise history and improves Madison to 8-1 all-time in Game 1s.
The Capitols were lifted by another strong performance from goaltender Caleb Heil, who stopped 32 of 33 shots to earn his third straight playoff win.
Tyden Bergeson provided the offense for Madison. The Moorhead, Minn., native scored both goals, one in the first period and the other in the third. Cooper Simpson pulled Youngstown within one in the final frame, but the Phantoms were unable to find the equalizer.
Madison has now defeated the Anderson Cup champions four times this season, including three wins on the road. With a 1-0 series lead, the Capitols return to the Covelli Centre on Saturday for Game 2.
