Weekend Preview: Caps Gear Up for Weekend in Iowa

Madison enters play this weekend in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Caps Gear Up for Weekend in Iowa
The Madison Capitols head to the Hawkeye State this weekend for a two-game road trip. Madison will face the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday night, then head to Cedar Rapids on Saturday to square off with the RoughRiders.

Madison owns the season series 2-1 over Waterloo. The Capitols erased early deficits in both of their victories while being shut out in their lone loss. Madison has outshot Waterloo 93–58 across the three meetings. The Black Hawks sit at seventh in the Western Conference and own the league's top penalty kill at 84.5%.

Following Friday's game, Madison will travel 55 miles south for their matchup with a familiar foe in the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. This will be the sixth and final regular season meeting between the Capitols and the RoughRiders. Madison controls the season series 3-2. Cedar Rapids sits one spot ahead of the Capitols in the Eastern Conference standings at fifth. Expect a high-scoring affair, as the teams' last meeting produced 11 total goals.

Heil and Griva Return From World Junior Championship
The Capitols have been without two of their best players for the past few games. Caleb Heil and Gustavs Griva will return to the Capitols this weekend after competing in the most prestigious junior hockey tournament in the world, the World Junior Championship. The event, held in Minnesota, returned to the United States this year after being held abroad the past six. Caleb Heil was selected to be one of three goalies to stand between the pipes for defending champions, Team USA. Forward Gustavs Griva suited up for his home country of Germany.

Team USA and Germany met in the preliminary round in front of a crowd of over 14,000. Heil got the start in net and went on to save 18 of the 21 shots sent his way as Team USA would win 6-3. Team USA would eventually get stunned by Finland in the quarterfinals. Heil appeared in two games during the tournament, winning both and posting an .846 save percentage. Griva would appear in three games for Germany but would not make it out of the preliminary round.

Alumni Report: Finley and Musa Play for U.S. Collegiate Select Team in Spengler Cup
A pair of former Capitols forwards represented the U.S. Collegiate Select Team at this year's Spengler Cup, the world's oldest invitational hockey tournament, held in Davos, Switzerland. Finely and Musa appeared in all four of the games played by the U.S. Collegiate Select Team. Finley, the Wisconsin Badger and New York Islanders draft pick, registered five points. He scored two goals and assisted on three others. UMass star and Florida native Jack Musa recorded two goals through the four games. The U.S. Collegiate Select Team went 2-2 at the event, losing to the host team HC Davos in the final.

Elliot Lennon Earns First USHL Win
With standout goaltender Caleb Heil competing at the World Junior Championship, Madison Capitols affiliate Elliot Lennon earned the call-up. Lennon was with the Capitols for five games; he started in two and posted a 1-1 record. His best game came last weekend against the Youngstown Phantoms. In a game that went into overtime, Lennon saved 30 of the 32 shots sent his way while playing the full 64 minutes on his way to picking up his first USHL win. The rising star from Quebec will return to Deerfield Academy to finish his senior season before continuing his academic and hockey career at Brown University.
