Madison Travels to Waterloo
After the holiday break, Madison will jump into action and travel to Waterloo to take on the Black Hawks for the second time this month. Madison defeated Waterloo 4-3 in overtime on December 12th to snap a three-game losing streak. Madison is 2-0 against Waterloo this season and will face the Black Hawks two more times this season after Saturday's game. Madison sits at 6th in the Eastern Conference standings; Waterloo at 7th in the West.Â
Capitols to Host RoughRidersÂ
Madison will host a familiar foe in the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Sunday afternoon at Bob Suter's LEGACY20 Arena. Cedar Rapids sits one spot and five points ahead of the Caps in the Eastern Conference standings. Each team enters Sunday with a 2-2 head to head record this season.Â
Gustavs Griva and Caleb Heil at World Junior ChampionshipÂ
Madison will be without two players this weekend as goalie Caleb Heil and forward Gustavs Griva will compete at the World Junior Championship in Minnesota. Griva, in his first season with the Capitols, will represent his home country of Germany. He becomes the third Capitols player to compete with a non-United States country in the past six events. Griva has had a standout season with Madison thus far, registering 19 points through 20 games.
Caleb Heil will stand between the pipes for Team USA at the event. The Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick is 10-4-0-2 this season in net for Madison and is one of three goaltenders on the USA roster.
Stout Returns After Winning Gold
Capitols defenseman John Stout will return to the team this weekend after winning a gold medal with Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge in Quebec. Team USA went 4-0-0-1 at the event, defeating Canada West 5-1 in the championship game. Stout secured his second gold medal in as many years, having also been part of Team USA's championship-winning roster last season at the event. The Wisconsin commit should have an immediate impact in his return to the Caps.
Lennon and Wiitala Called UpÂ
The Capitols called up goalie Elliot Lennon and forward Bryce Wiitala ahead of this weekend's games. Lennon has played seven games for Deerfield Academy this season, where he has recorded a .914 save percentage. He is committed to playing his collegiate hockey at Brown University. Wiitala gets the call-up after playing 23 games in the NAHL for the Minnesota Mallards. The Lindenwood commit has registered 10 goals and 13 assists this season. Both players look to make their USHL debuts this weekend.
