Weekend Preview: Caps Travel to Lincoln

Madison enters play this weekend with a 4-2-0-0 record on the season.

Madison hits the road for a two-game series against the Lincoln Stars this weekend, wrapping up the season series between the two teams. The Capitols are 1-0-0-0 against Lincoln after winning each team's opening game at the USHL Fall Classic, 3-2.

WEEKEND RECAP
Madison opened the weekend at home on Friday night with a dominant 8-1 victory over the USNTDP U17s, marking just the twelfth time in the team's Tier I history that the Capitols have scored eight or more goals in a game. The offense came from all over the lineup as Madison controlled play from start to finish. On Saturday, the Caps carried that momentum on the road to Waterloo, earning a 3-1 win behind a steady defensive effort and timely scoring to complete the weekend with a pair of wins and extend their winning streak to three games.

CALEB HEIL - GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Madison goaltender Caleb Heil was named USHL Goaltender of the Week after backstopping the Capitols to a pair of wins over the weekend. The North Dakota commit and 2025 Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick stopped 20 of 21 shots in Friday's 8-1 victory over the USNTDP U17s and turned aside 21 of 22 in Saturday's 3-1 win at Waterloo. Heil has now won three straight starts and sits at 3-1-0-0 on the season with a 2.02 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage.

CAPITOLS LOOK TO SHINE IN LINCOLN
Madison hits the road this weekend for a two-game set against the Lincoln Stars, wrapping up the season series between the two teams. The Capitols took the first and only matchup so far, earning a 3-2 win at the USHL Fall Classic. That loss for Lincoln sparked a tough stretch, as the defending Anderson Cup champions enter the weekend with an 0-5-0-0 record after being swept on the road in Cedar Rapids. The Stars have dealt with significant roster turnover, particularly in net following the departure of All-USHL First Team goaltender Yan Shostak to college. Lincoln now leans on the tandem of Jack Solomon and William Prowse, but the team has struggled defensively, allowing 4.40 goals per game, the second highest mark in the league.

GERMAN ENGINE RUNNING HOT
Gustavs Griva enters the weekend tied for the USHL lead in points after a strong offensive stretch. The German forward, who was selected 41st overall by the Capitols in the Phase II Draft, picked up one goal and three assists this past weekend while skating alongside Max Rider and Cooper Snee. Griva has recorded six points in his last three games, doubling his season total in that span. The twin brother of fellow Capitols forward Rihards Griva, Gustavs now sits at three goals and five assists on the year.

UHLENKAMP UNLEASHED
Gavin Uhlenkamp broke out offensively over the weekend, scoring three goals across Madison's two wins. Entering the weekend with just one goal on the season, Uhlenkamp found the back of the net twice in Friday's 8-1 win over the USNTDP U17s before adding the game-tying goal on Saturday in Waterloo, sparking the Capitols' comeback victory. The Wisconsin commit scored 17 goals last season and led all returning players in points entering the year, and his strong weekend performance may be a sign that he's finding his scoring rhythm once again.

POINT PILING QUARTET
Four Capitols players are averaging at least a point per game early in the season, providing a major boost to Madison's offense. Newcomers Gustavs Griva (3-5–8), Tyden Bergeson (3-3–6), and Cooper Snee (0-4–4), along with returner Max Rider (2-4–6), have all produced consistently through the team's first six games. All four notched multi-point efforts in Friday's 8-1 win over the USNTDP U17s, while Griva and Snee each added an assist in Saturday's victory at Waterloo. Bergeson, who appeared in games as an affiliate last year, has quickly transitioned into a full-time contributor as part of a balanced and productive offensive group.

BALANCED BLUE LINE ATTACK
Madison's blue line has been a key source of offense early in the season, as the Capitols stand as the only team in the USHL with every defenseman who has played a game recording at least one point. All eight blueliners appeared in games for Madison last season, either as full-time roster players or affiliates, and that experience is showing. Five of the eight already have multiple points, and the defensive unit has combined for two goals and sixteen assists for eighteen total points to start the year.
